Shopian, Apr 28 (KNO): Decision of the administration to declare Darul Uloom, Jamia Siraj-ul-Uloom, Imam Sahib, Shopian as an “unlawful entity” under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) was taken after carrying out in depth investigations, sources told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) on Tuesday. They said that District Police Shopian prepared a detailed dossier following which proceedings were initiated under Section 8 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against the institution. They said that during the course of proceedings, the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, issued a notice to the management, affording it a full & fair opportunity to present its defence. The management of Jamia Siraj ul Uloom submitted its objections, which were examined along with the material evidence and inputs placed on record by the District Police. Upon due consideration, the Divisional Commissioner, vide order dated April 24, declared it as unlawful under Section 8 of UAPA. The action, sources said, is based on substantial and credible evidence indicating the following: “Radicalisation and Recruitment Linkages: Multiple individuals associated with the seminary were found to have been radicalised and subsequently joined terrorist organisations operating in the region. High Number of terrorist affiliations: As many as 17 former students of the institution had joined terrorist ranks and were later killed in separate encounters, indicating a consistent pattern of indoctrination and recruitment.” Sources said, “Security agencies have, over a period of time, generated adverse reports suggesting the institution’s involvement in activities prejudicial to the security and integrity of the State. Inputs further indicated the existence of a support environment that enabled and encouraged unlawful and anti-national activities.” They said, “Number of near relatives of killed terrorists are engaged at key positions in the Jamia Siraj ul uloom. In order to evade legal action, members of banned Jamaat-e-Islami were operating through proxies to evade the legal action and were running their agenda covertly.”—(KNO)
